Public records requests follow the rules in MGL c. 66, § 10. The department has 10 business days to respond. Copies are $0.05 per page. Staff search time is free for the first two hours, then $25 per hour. Records that relate to active investigations or that fall under legal exemptions may be withheld in part or entirely.

Norfolk County Court Records

Criminal cases from Brookline are heard at Brookline District Court or Norfolk County Superior Court. The Superior Court is at 650 High Street, Dedham, MA. Phone: (781) 326-1600. District Court covers misdemeanors and lower-level felonies. Superior Court handles more serious charges and jury trials.

Records from both courts are searchable through the Massachusetts Trial Court portal. Free docket lookups are available online. Certified copies require a fee and must be requested at the court clerk's office. Not every record is public. Juvenile cases are sealed by law. Domestic violence records are restricted under MGL c. 41, § 97D and are not available through standard public records requests.

Records that have been sealed or expunged will not appear in searches. If a case was dismissed or resulted in a not-guilty verdict, it should have been removed from standard view under MGL c. 276, § 100C, which provides for automatic sealing of non-conviction records.

CORI: Criminal Offender Record Information

Massachusetts uses a statewide criminal history system called CORI. It is defined under MGL c. 6, § 167. CORI covers arrests, charges, and outcomes for adults 18 and older. Access is not open to everyone. Who can see a person's record depends on why they are asking.

Individuals can get their own CORI for free. Use the iCORI system on mass.gov. Create an account, prove your identity, and submit a request. The results usually come back quickly. You will see all arrests, charges, and how each case resolved.

Records do not stay on CORI indefinitely. Under MGL c. 6, § 172, misdemeanor convictions age off after five years. Felony convictions age off after ten. Non-conviction records drop off immediately. Full details on how CORI works are available at mass.gov CORI guidance.

Norfolk County Sheriff's Office

The Norfolk County Sheriff's Office is at 200 Village Grange, Dedham, MA 02026. Phone: (781) 329-3700. Website: norfolksheriff.com. The sheriff operates the Norfolk County Correctional Center in Dedham, where people held after arrest in Brookline may be transferred.

The sheriff's office handles county jail operations and court transport. They do not maintain local police arrest records. To find someone in a state prison rather than the county facility, check the Massachusetts Department of Correction inmate database at mass.gov/doc.

District Attorney: Norfolk County

The Norfolk County District Attorney's office is at 45 Shawmut Road, Canton, MA. Phone: (781) 830-4800. Website: norfolkda.com. The DA prosecutes all county criminal cases, including those from Brookline.

The DA's office does not release individual arrest records to the public. When a case goes to court, the court file becomes part of the public record. Access it at the clerk's office at Norfolk County Superior Court or Brookline District Court. Notable case information may also appear in press releases on the DA's website.

Sex Offender Registry

The Massachusetts Sex Offender Registry Board maintains a searchable public database at mass.gov/sorb. You can search by name or zip code. Level 2 and Level 3 offenders are included in public results. Level 1 offenders are not listed. The registry is a separate system from arrest records but is often checked at the same time.

Sealing and Expungement in Brookline

People with Brookline arrest records have legal options if they want to limit access to them. Sealing under MGL c. 276, § 100A requires a petition to the court. Misdemeanor convictions can be sealed after three years. Felony convictions require a seven-year wait. The clock starts from the date of conviction or the date of release, whichever is later.

Expungement goes a step further. Under MGL c. 276, §§ 100E-100U, qualifying records can be fully erased rather than just sealed. Eligibility is limited. Cases involving violence, sex offenses, and certain other serious factors do not qualify. A judge must approve the request before anything is removed.

Note: An arrest record shows that a charge was filed. It does not mean the person was convicted. All individuals are presumed innocent unless a court finds otherwise.

Massachusetts State Police hold public records in many cases. Submit requests at mass.gov/state-police-public-records. State Police may assist Brookline Police on certain investigations.
