Police arrest logs are public by state law. Under MGL c. 41, § 98F, every police department must maintain a daily log that is open for public inspection. Essex County Court Records

Criminal cases from Peabody go to Peabody District Court or Essex County Superior Court. The Superior Court is at 10 Federal Street, Salem, just a short distance from Peabody. District Court handles misdemeanors and lower-level charges. Superior Court takes serious felonies and jury trials.

Case dockets are searchable for free on the Massachusetts Trial Court website. You can find case numbers, charge details, and hearing dates. Certified copies of records require a visit to the clerk's office and payment of a per-page fee. Not everything is available online. Some documents must be pulled in person.

Certain records are closed by law. Juvenile cases are sealed. Domestic violence records are restricted under MGL c. 41, § 97D. Records that have been sealed or expunged do not appear in public searches, whether online or at the courthouse window.

CORI: Criminal Offender Record Information

The Massachusetts CORI system tracks arrest and conviction history statewide for anyone 18 or older. The governing statute is MGL c. 6, § 167. CORI is not fully open to the public. Access depends on who is requesting the information and why.

Individuals can look up their own CORI at no cost through the iCORI system. Create an account, verify your identity, and request your report. Results usually come back fast. Your CORI will list every arrest, charge, and case outcome tied to your name.

Under MGL c. 6, § 172, certain records age off CORI over time. Misdemeanor convictions drop off after five years. Felony convictions drop off after ten. Non-conviction records, meaning dismissed charges or not-guilty verdicts, come off the report right away. Sealed records are removed from standard results entirely. The state's full breakdown of CORI access rules is at mass.gov/cori.

Essex County Sheriff's Office

The Essex County Sheriff's Office is at 20 Manning Avenue, Middleton, MA. Phone: (978) 750-1900. Website: essexsheriffma.org. The Middleton House of Correction, the county's main jail, is very close to Peabody. People arrested in Peabody may be transferred there before or after their court appearance.

Call the sheriff's office if you need to find out whether a specific person is being held at the county facility. The sheriff does not keep Peabody Police arrest logs. Those records come from the police department directly.

For anyone transferred to a state prison, check the Department of Correction inmate search at mass.gov/doc. The DOC system and the county jail are completely separate. A person in county custody will not show up in the DOC database.

District Attorney: Essex County

The Essex County District Attorney handles all criminal prosecutions for cases that arise in Peabody. The DA's office is at 10 Federal Street, Salem, MA. Phone: (978) 745-6610. Website: essexda.com.

The DA's office does not provide individual arrest records to the public. Once a case is filed in court, it becomes a public record. You can access those files through the clerk at Peabody District Court or Essex County Superior Court. The DA's website also posts press releases for significant cases.

Sex Offender Registry

The Massachusetts Sex Offender Registry Board maintains a public database at mass.gov/sorb. Search by name or zip code to find registered sex offenders in Peabody. Level 2 and Level 3 offenders are listed publicly. Level 1 offenders are not shown in the public-facing database.

Registry information is updated as people register, move, or are reclassified. Always use the official SORB website for current data. Local police can also provide a printed list of registered offenders in Peabody on request.

Sealing and Expungement

Massachusetts gives people two ways to limit access to a criminal record: sealing and expungement. Both require meeting specific legal criteria. The right option depends on your record and what you are trying to accomplish.

Under MGL c. 276, § 100A, you can petition to seal a misdemeanor conviction three years after the case ends. For a felony conviction, the wait is seven years. Time runs from the date of conviction or the date of release from custody, whichever is later. A sealed record does not appear in standard CORI checks, but it still exists and can be accessed by courts and certain agencies.

Non-conviction records are treated differently. Under MGL c. 276, § 100C, charges that ended in dismissal or acquittal are removed from public CORI automatically. No petition is needed. Those records should not show up on routine background checks.

Expungement, available under MGL c. 276, §§ 100E-100U, goes further than sealing. It destroys the record completely. Eligibility is narrow. Violent offenses, sex crimes, and other serious categories do not qualify. A judge must approve every expungement petition. If you are not sure whether you qualify, a legal aid office or private attorney in Essex County can review your record and advise you.
